Ever heard the expression ‘You are what you eat’? This is not a silly statement, our bodies are made up of a set of systems, and the food we eat is the fuel for these systems. Our bodies are constantly repairing and rebuilding, if we fill it with cheap, poor quality fuel, then why are we surprised when our bodies function at less than optimum?
Eating a balanced diet is vital for good health and wellbeing, food provides energy which enables our bodies to function. Proteins, fats and carbohydrate all provide the vitamins and minerals essential to live, repair, grow and function well.
Unfortunately the modern diet relies too much on over processed, low nutrient, high energy food; we are not eating enough nutrient dense ‘real’ food. Our reliance on fast, convenient, high energy food is not only making us fat but it is making us sick. Diet and nutrition have an important role to play in many of the major causes of death, illness and disability and the development of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, some forms of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, dental caries, gall bladder disease, dementia and nutritional anaemias. Following a healthy diet will not only give more energy, improve your concentration, mood and vitality, it can assist in minimising our risk of developing diet-related diseases.
What foods should we be eating?
‘Real Food’, eat as close to nature as possible, avoid processed foods where ever possible, stack your plates with cruciferous vegetables (brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale) and definitely avoid ‘diet food’
